As we ensconce the midpoint of summer in July, it was appropriately a month filled with colourful and radiant music. Here are my Top 10 tracks to be released last month:
in collaboration with my-top-ten-tracks.com
AURORA – The Devil Is Human
AURORA’s empowering new track “The Devil Is Human” shows the masterful Norwegian singer-songwriter discussing feminine sexuality and how patriarchal society has historically treated it. The heavy 90’s trip-hop sound, blended with AURORA’s idiosyncratic quirks, is a joy to behold.
Hot Chip – Eleanor
Beloved British electronic rockers Hot Chip’s latest single, “Eleanor,” is a bright, sparkling disco-fuelled track with a flexuous, energetic backbeat and a silky, catchy melody.
Alvvays – Pharmacist
“Pharmacist” is the first single from the Toronto band Alvvays in five years. A short and sweet number, filled with Alvvays trademark dreamy, nostalgic, and shoegaze sound, ideal for listening in this summer season.
Loyle Carner – Hate
“Hate” marks a darker sound for South London rapper Loyle Carner, with a relentless beat and piercing production, accompanied by Carner’s fierce lyrics on the state of the country and his experiences as a young person of colour in the UK. “Hate” is a sonically boisterous and fierce triumph.
The Big Moon – Wide Eyes
Indie female four-piece The Big Moon’s first single from their upcoming third album, ‘Here is Everything,’ is an emotional, pristine, uplifting ode to friendship and love. Also, watch out for the incredible handshake choreography in the video!
Killer mike-RUN ft. Dave Chappelle & Young Thug
Run the Jewels rapper Killer Mike has released “Run,” his first solo single in over a decade, featuring trap star Young Thug and a striking monologue from comedian Dave Chappelle. A powerful track examining the brutal battle for equality and defending Black art.
Jessie Ware – Free Yourself
“Free Yourself” is destined to be part of your dance playlist, thanks to its chiming strings, horns, and emphatically exquisite chorus that urges you to stay strong through life’s adversities. Jessie Ware is becoming an expert in delivering euphoric dance music.
Steve Lacy – Sunshine ft. Fousheé
Steve Lacy has again collaborated with Compton soul singer Foushée for “Sunshine,” the third single from his latest album, “Gemini Rights.” The ballad finds Steve dealing with his rekindled feelings for an ex.
Katy J Pearson- Howl
Katy J Pearson puts her captivating mixture of gliding melody and sultry, intimate narration into “Howl,” a song about primal love, featuring a buoyant brass section and backing vocals from Orlando Weeks.
Kat Koan & The Lost Souls- Slow
Berlin-based Kat Koan & The Lost Souls have released a heavy and menacing alt-rock cover of Kylie of Minogue’s 2003 hit “Slow,” taken from the forthcoming debut album “Coccon,” due out later this year.
Now we meander into August; its birth flower is the gladiolus or poppy, representing beauty, strength of character, love, and family, something we hope your month is brimming with!
Check back next month for more new music.
